On Thursday, November 14, 2024 Mira Vista will join nearly 350,000 other students in more than 1400 schools nationwide who will participate in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. The walk will commemorate the day (64 years ago) that Ruby Bridges integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. She was the first black student to integrate an elementary school in the south. She was met with a lot of opposition and even some violence. But Ruby and her family were also met with a lot of support from their neighbors and from people all across the country.
Today, Ruby Bridges is 70 years old and a statue of her has been erected outside of William Frantz Elementary School. Ruby Bridges hopes that her Walk to School Day will inspire children and adults to start a day of dialogue to discuss racism, bullying, youth activism and other important social issues.
We hope you will join us next Thursday morning!
