What should I do if my child has a medical condition that requires special attention?
Prior to the start of the school year, you will complete medical information forms in PowerSchool. If your child has any specific medical needs or requires accommodations, please contact the front office so we can discuss how best to support them.
How do I enroll my child in childcare after school?
You will receive an email each May with details about how to get on the interest list, then in July, you will be notified about a form in PowerSchool to complete. There is limited availability, so a spot is not guaranteed.
Priority enrollment is given to students who:
Are experiencing housing instability (Family in Transition / McKinney-Vento)
Are in foster care
Are English Learners
Qualify for the federal Free or Reduced-Price Meals (FRPM) program
What are the TK & Kindergarten age cutoffs?
Children are eligible for TK if they turn 4 years old on or before September 1 of the year they begin.
Children are eligible for kindergarten if they turn 5 years old on or before September 1 of the year they begin.
Are there free lunches?
Yes, there is free lunch and breakfast for all students. There is no sign up required. Breakfast is served in the MPR from 8:15-8:25. Adult supervision is provided during this time.
How do I receive the most up-to-date information about Mira Vista?
The best way to stay informed of events is to subscribe to the PTA Newsletter. The PTA sends out regular updates on upcoming events and important school-related information.
I’d like to help out in the classroom. Are there volunteering opportunities?
To volunteer in the classroom or on field trips (or in any capacity that involves contact with the children) you must get a volunteer badge. More information will be sent to all families prior to the start of each school year.
Your teacher will let you know how to sign up to volunteer in your child’s classroom.
You can also volunteer to help at lunch time or recess, by contacting the front office.
You do not need a volunteer badge to participate in some events with the PTA. Mira Vista is extremely fortunate to have a very active PTA. We strongly encourage new parents to get involved! If you don’t feel you have time to volunteer on a regular basis, pick one or two events per year to contribute to in some way.
What should my child bring on the first day of school?
On the first day of school they will need a backpack that can fit a regular sized folder, a water bottle, lunch if they would like to bring it from home (free lunch is provided for all students), and a full change of clothes for TK and K aged students.
Where can we park?
There is ample street parking in front of the school on Hazel Ave and the side streets.
When does new student registration begin?
Please click here for the district registration page for current registration dates. Registration is typically in late January. Please either register online or bring your completed materials to the school during office hours (9–3 pm, closed 12–1 for lunch).
When do I receive official notification of my child’s placement?
The school will notify you sometime during the summer if there is no room for your child at Mira Vista, and you’ll be informed of your child’s alternate school placement. Otherwise, please assume your child has been placed at Mira Vista.
Is there an orientation to help my student get ready for school?
There will be a TK & Kindergarten Orientation held in August. Your child will have an opportunity to see the classrooms and schoolyard and meet some of the teachers, as well as the Principal and other school personnel.
How do drop-off and pick-up work?
If possible, please park on the street and walk in to drop off your student or pick them up as the lower lot can get quite congested at pick up and drop off times. If you would like to utilize the drop off lane, just take note that there is no parking in that lane or stopping for long periods of time. For student safety, there is only drop off in the most inner lane, by the sidewalk.
What types of school supplies do children need?
This will vary by grade level. Your teacher will let you know in the first week of school.
How do I get information about classroom and school events?
Mira Vista PTA emails a weekly newsletter during the school year to keep parents informed of all upcoming school events and important information.
Additionally, your child will be given a “Wednesday folder” at the beginning of the year, which is sent home every Wednesday with homework and anything else that needs to be conveyed to parents. Teachers will send letters to parents via this folder, and sometimes the PTA, or other school committees will send messages this way, as well. Your child should return the folder to class every Thursday.
Generally, a parent will volunteer to be the Room Parent for each teacher/classroom and will facilitate communication via email or WhatsApp.
Where is the Lost & Found located?
In the main hallway and also along the fence by the climbing structure on the main yard.
Do I need to pack a snack for my child?
Please pack a small snack for your child in his or her backpack. Snacks should be healthy (no candy or soda allowed). Snack time is only 15 minutes long, so please pack a snack that can be consumed in that time. Fruit, yogurt, cereal bars, baby carrots, and string cheese are great choices.
How do I know what class my child is enrolled in?
All of the class lists will be taped up to the windows by the front office on the Friday before the start of school.
Where can I find the school calendar?
For planning purposes, please see the district's Academic Calendar. For information specific to Mira Vista, please see the Home Page
How can I assess my child's TK & Kindergarten readiness?
TK Students need to be able to eat and use the restroom without assistance.
For Kindergarten:
What times are drop-off and pick-up?
TK-K: 8:25-1:30
Grades 1-3: 8:25-2:20
Grades 4-6: 8:25-2:45
How do I communicate with my child’s teacher?
All teachers use different communication systems. Some use Class Dojo, some use parent square, some like to just use email. Your teacher will notify you on the first day of school or soon after what platform they use and how to get connected.
What items should be labeled with my child's name?
Everything that can be labeled should be labeled.
What is the TK & Kindergarten schedule?
Regular Day Schedule:
8:25am Lineup bell rings
8:30am School starts
1:30pm School ends
How can I get in touch with other parents?
Every year, there are summer play-dates organized by other Mira Vista parents specifically for incoming families. When the dates and times are confirmed they will be reflected on the upcoming events section on the Home Page. Room Parents can also create a staff roster. Also Facebook.

En relación a esto es importante informar que las disposiciones de Título IX requieren que los distritos escolares tomen las medidas apropiadas inmediatas para investigar cuando se sabe que existe o cuando hay sospechas razonables de una posible violación de las regulaciones de Título IX.

How do “minimum days” work for TK & Kindergartners?
Shortened (minimum) days only pertain to grades 1-6. The TK & Kindergarten day always remains on the same schedule.
Can parents stay with their child for a while at the beginning of class for TK & Kindergarten?
Parents are often welcome to enter the classroom, particularly at the beginning of the school year, to help their child get settled. However, in most cases, families should expect to drop off their child and then leave, allowing the teacher to build relationships and establish routines with the students. Because every teacher approaches separation concerns differently—for both children and parents—it’s best to follow the teacher’s guidance and allow them to lead the process.
What happens if someone other than a parent or guardian is picking up my child?
Please inform your child’s teacher at drop-off if someone else will be picking them up. The designated adult will be asked to present a valid photo ID at pick-up.
Can my child bring toys or personal items to school?
We ask that personal toys and other non-essential items remain at home. This helps prevent items from being lost or damaged and allows children to stay focused and engaged throughout the school day.
