Air quality update and postponements - Aug. 23

Good evening WCCUSD community,

Thank you again for a strong Week 1 start. WCCUSD’s team of teachers and support staff kicked off the 2020-21 year in a completely distance learning format that included a global COVID-19 pandemic, record breaking heatwave, rolling blackouts and unfortunately the return of wildfire season.

On Monday, distance learning will continue. However, all schools and district departments will be closed to the public due to the worsening air quality. We have monitored the air quality throughout the weekend and will limit the number of employees at each school with no employees working outside. Due to the air quality, we have also postponed the following events this week:

  • All materials pick up scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been postponed.

  • Curbside meal pick up, scheduled at the 15 school locations for Tuesday, has also been postponed and will now occur on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

  • All athletics are postponed until further notice

  • We will continue to monitor the air quality as a result of the wildfires and provide additional updates on Monday and Tuesday as they become available. Virtual Back-to-School Night for elementary schools on Monday, middle schools on Tuesday and high schools on Thursday will continue as planned.

We understand that these are very challenging times and we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to serve WCCUSD students and maintain safety of staff and students during this unusual series of events.
