Spring has sprung, and our teachers would LOVE to take their classes out for lessons in the gardens, but they can’t do it without a parent garden volunteer.
How can you help?
Join your teachers in the gardens on Fridays from 1 to 2:20 p.m. and watch your child’s love for nature grow.
Please save the date
Please join us at our garden work party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 11. We’ll be weeding, mulching, and having fun.

Save the date: Garden work party, March 11 (weather permitting).
The Mira Vista Healthy Kid’s Fun Run was a great success! Every class from kindergarten to 8th grade participated, and fun was had by all!
So the run is over, but it’s not too late to submit contributions. The deadline to donate for the Fun Run has been extended through February 27. The website will continue to accept donations, and students can still bring in pledges to the classroom. All prizes for donations collected will be given out on February 28.
The Fun Run is a PTA fundraiser to help raise money for important programs such as field trips, art, music, gardens, teacher grants, and so much more. We really appreciate your support!
The Pajama Party is coming up on Thursday March 2nd! As ever, we need help to pull off this wonderful event. Please fill out the Google form linked here if you can volunteer to help out on the night.
We need people to work the refreshment table, sell book bags, organize the book exchange, read bedtime stories and of course set-up/clean-up.
Thanks for your support of the Pajama Party year after year!
The Healthy Kids Fun Run program at Mira Vista School kicked off on January 31! From now until the Fun Run Day, Wednesday, February 15, your student’s job is to go out and get pledges! You can make donations online to either specific students or the school in general. Funds will be used to help all of our students. This will be a great event with lots of fantastic prizes!
We are also looking for a few parent volunteers from each class on the day of the run to help track laps and hand out water. The schedule for the Fun Run is:
Run 1: 8:30-9:15 (Kindergarten)
Your donation is tax deductible – Tax ID # 94-6184036
Donate, forward to your friends and family. Run, kids, run!
Have you seen what’s been happening in the gardens lately? Heard about any tasty meals made in class? Go check out the mid-year progress report over at the garden blog.
Dear Mira Vista Parents,
Some parents and staff at Mira Vista have been exploring options for healthier school lunches and breakfasts. We have the opportunity to partner with a program called the Conscious Kitchen, which provides healthy, fresh meals cooked onsite with zero waste. And we are reaching out to you for your help with the one-week pilot program.
Where YOU come in:
See the lunch program firsthand. To demonstrate how a how fresh, local, organic, seasonal and non-genetically modified (FLOSN) food program could work in WCCUSD, we need your help as a volunteer during the week of January 30 through February 3 at Peres Elementary School, 719 5th Street, Richmond. Volunteers will help with prepping and serving food, monitoring the waste stations, observing and interacting with children, helping with surveys and cleanup, and you would get to see what type of meals would be served and interact with an incredible community. Local chefs have been invited to prepare lunch that week.
There are several shifts available, so please sign up to volunteer at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044daca929a6f85-ataste.
If the WCCUSD pilot goes well at Peres, there are discussions about bringing the pilot to Mira Vista School in the spring, or even a yearlong pilot at Mira Vista, Madera, and Peres Elementary Schools in the 2017–2018 school year. This approach would replace the prepackaged heat and serve school breakfast/lunch model.
Welcome Back to Winter Showers
So begins the second half of the school year!
Dear Mira Vista Snickerdoodles,
I don’t know about you, but for me, having the kids back in school means I finally get a break. Wow, two weeks is a long time when you’ve got to come up with your own fun! I know mine are thrilled to be back among their friends.
Let’s raise a glass of whatever beverage we’ve got (mine is Vitamin Water Zero) to the anti-princess Princess Leia who has inspired so many of our kids, both male and female, to know they can be powerful and resourceful – and have seven-foot furry aliens as friends. Something we all should shoot for (pyoo, pyoo). Take your broken heart and make it into art, my dears.
On to the week’s events:
Kinder Tour: Friday, Jan 13, 8:45 am
City of El Cerrito Northern Gateway Clean-Up: Saturday, Jan 14, 10 am – 2 pm
Chipotle Dinner Fundraiser: Tuesday, Jan 17, 5 pm – 8:30 pm
Parent University Engagement Night: Wednesday, Jan 18, 6:30 pm
Get Ready! STEAM starts the week of January 23, 3-3:45 pm
