And We Ran

The Mira Vista Healthy Kid’s Fun Run was a great success! Every class from kindergarten to 8th grade participated, and fun was had by all!

So the run is over, but it’s not too late to submit contributions. The deadline to donate for the Fun Run has been extended through February 27. The website will continue to accept donations, and students can still bring in pledges to the classroom. All prizes for donations collected will be given out on February 28.

The Fun Run is a PTA fundraiser to help raise money for important programs such as  field trips, art, music, gardens, teacher grants, and so much more. We really appreciate your support!

Pajama Party Volunteers Needed

The Pajama Party is coming up on Thursday March 2nd! As ever, we need help to pull off this wonderful event. Please fill out the Google form linked here if you can volunteer to help out on the night.

We need people to work the refreshment table, sell book bags, organize the book exchange, read bedtime stories and of course set-up/clean-up.

Thanks for your support of the Pajama Party year after year!

We Run This

Dear Mira Vista Parents,

Some parents and staff at Mira Vista have been exploring options for healthier school lunches and breakfasts. We have the opportunity to partner with a program called the Conscious Kitchen, which provides healthy, fresh meals cooked onsite with zero waste. And we are reaching out to you for your help with the one-week pilot program.

Where YOU come in:

See the lunch program firsthand. To demonstrate how a how fresh, local, organic, seasonal and non-genetically modified (FLOSN) food program could work in WCCUSD, we need your help as a volunteer during the week of January 30 through February 3 at Peres Elementary School, 719 5th Street, Richmond. Volunteers will help with prepping and serving food, monitoring the waste stations, observing and interacting with children, helping with surveys and cleanup, and you would get to see what type of meals would be served and interact with an incredible community. Local chefs have been invited to prepare lunch that week.

There are several shifts available, so please sign up to volunteer at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044daca929a6f85-ataste.

If the WCCUSD pilot goes well at Peres, there are discussions about bringing the pilot to Mira Vista School in the spring, or even a yearlong pilot at Mira Vista, Madera, and Peres Elementary Schools in the 2017–2018 school year. This approach would replace the prepackaged heat and serve school breakfast/lunch model.

With gratitude,

Mira Vista PTA and the Conscious Kitchen Team

Winter Concert and Art Show This Thursday: Band, Glee Club and Recorders—oh, my!

Hello, Mira Vista!

Just a few short notes this week:

Thursday, January 26, 6:30 pm: Winter Concert and Art Show

Come to this elegant evening of musical marvelousness. The glee club, band and recorders will perform, and an art show featuring every class in the school will also be having its grand opening, all in the Multi-Purpose Room. If you miss the concert, you can still see the art – it’ll be up for at least a week, and the kids are (deservedly) extremely proud of their work.

STEAM started this week

Did your kid start coming to Mr. Lackey’s after-school science/arts club? If yes -> yay! If no, did he or she want to? If no -> that’s cool! If yes -> here is the schedule!

Grades K-1: Monday 3:00 – 3:45 pm
Grades 2-3: Tuesday 3:00 – 3:45 pm
Wednesday (No STEAM!)
Grades 4-5: Thursday 3:00 – 3:45 pm
Grades 6+: Friday 3:00 – 3:45 pm

More info and sign-ups here: http://bit.ly/MVSTEAM2017

No Movie Night

Contrary to “alternative facts” on our calendar, there’s no movie night this week. A little bird told me they will resume in April.

See you next week!

Universidad de padres—School Smarts: La primera sección será este miércoles 25 de enero de 6–8 pm.

Cena, cuidado de niños e interpretación se proveerán. Si le gustaría inscribirse pase a recoger una forma a la oficina principal.

So begins the second half of the school year!

Dear Mira Vista Snickerdoodles,

I don’t know about you, but for me, having the kids back in school means I finally get a break. Wow, two weeks is a long time when you’ve got to come up with your own fun! I know mine are thrilled to be back among their friends.

Let’s raise a glass of whatever beverage we’ve got (mine is Vitamin Water Zero) to the anti-princess Princess Leia who has inspired so many of our kids, both male and female, to know they can be powerful and resourceful – and have seven-foot furry aliens as friends. Something we all should shoot for (pyoo, pyoo). Take your broken heart and make it into art, my dears.

On to the week’s events:

Kinder Tour: Friday, Jan 13, 8:45 am
Got a younger kid coming into the Mira Vista fold? Come to the tour! Or friends you want to bring to us? Let them know! See you then.

City of El Cerrito Northern Gateway Clean-Up: Saturday, Jan 14, 10 am – 2 pm
You and your kids can help keep trash from polluting the bay and creeks.  Wear a hat and bring water. For more information, email green@ci.el-cerrito.ca.us.

Chipotle Dinner Fundraiser: Tuesday, Jan 17, 5 pm – 8:30 pm
Somehow this always ends up being the most fun Dinner for Mira Vista of the year. It’s also the most lucrative: 50% of the evening’s purchases come back to the school! So come out and chow down!

Parent University Engagement Night: Wednesday, Jan 18, 6:30 pm
This is the School Smarts program we told you about a few weeks ago. Parents who would like to be more involved as volunteers and advocates will receive incredibly valuable training and education. We will have Dinner! Child care! Fun & educational art activities for the whole family!

Get Ready! STEAM starts the week of January 23, 3-3:45 pm
For a full schedule of Mr. Lackey’s stellar Science-Tech-Engineering-Arts-Math program, watch your kids’ folders this week. You can see that info and register here: http://bit.ly/MVSTEAM2017

Volunteers needed! Healthy Eating Pilot Program
Are you passionate about healthy lunch options in our public schools? We are partnering with a program called Conscious Kitchen that provides healthy, fresh meals cooked on site with zero waste, hoping to bring it to the WCCUSD. Without volunteers, it won’t happen. YOU are needed during the week of January 30-February 3 at Peres Elementary School, 719 5th Street, Richmond, CA 94801.

If you would like to help prepare food, sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044daca929a6f85-ataste. If you would like to help collect data, sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044caea722a4f85-baseline. Eventually, this could come to Mira Vista and replace the processed food we now serve!

English Classes for Adults: Mondays and Fridays from 8:45-11:45 am
If you have been wishing to brush up your language skills, these free classes are for you. Child care is provided, and a supportive group of enthusiastic fellow students will be your new best friends.
