Have you seen what’s been happening in the gardens lately? Heard about any tasty meals made in class? Go check out the mid-year progress report over at the garden blog.
Dear Mira Vista Parents,
Some parents and staff at Mira Vista have been exploring options for healthier school lunches and breakfasts. We have the opportunity to partner with a program called the Conscious Kitchen, which provides healthy, fresh meals cooked onsite with zero waste. And we are reaching out to you for your help with the one-week pilot program.
Where YOU come in:
See the lunch program firsthand. To demonstrate how a how fresh, local, organic, seasonal and non-genetically modified (FLOSN) food program could work in WCCUSD, we need your help as a volunteer during the week of January 30 through February 3 at Peres Elementary School, 719 5th Street, Richmond. Volunteers will help with prepping and serving food, monitoring the waste stations, observing and interacting with children, helping with surveys and cleanup, and you would get to see what type of meals would be served and interact with an incredible community. Local chefs have been invited to prepare lunch that week.
There are several shifts available, so please sign up to volunteer at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044daca929a6f85-ataste.
If the WCCUSD pilot goes well at Peres, there are discussions about bringing the pilot to Mira Vista School in the spring, or even a yearlong pilot at Mira Vista, Madera, and Peres Elementary Schools in the 2017–2018 school year. This approach would replace the prepackaged heat and serve school breakfast/lunch model.
Welcome Back to Winter Showers
So begins the second half of the school year!
Dear Mira Vista Snickerdoodles,
I don’t know about you, but for me, having the kids back in school means I finally get a break. Wow, two weeks is a long time when you’ve got to come up with your own fun! I know mine are thrilled to be back among their friends.
Let’s raise a glass of whatever beverage we’ve got (mine is Vitamin Water Zero) to the anti-princess Princess Leia who has inspired so many of our kids, both male and female, to know they can be powerful and resourceful – and have seven-foot furry aliens as friends. Something we all should shoot for (pyoo, pyoo). Take your broken heart and make it into art, my dears.
On to the week’s events:
Kinder Tour: Friday, Jan 13, 8:45 am
City of El Cerrito Northern Gateway Clean-Up: Saturday, Jan 14, 10 am – 2 pm

Principal Chilcott will fire up the popcorn machine to celebrate all the great things happening at our school, and there’ll be a movie to keep the kids occupied.
The same evening, we’re also inviting all current 5th graders to come for a break-out session, where teachers will discuss how we run grades 6 through 8 at Mira Vista. Any family of 5th graders who attend will have first choice of electives in 6th grade. This will take place in Rooms 17 and 18.

Do you need an incentive to help your kids balance out the sugary treats that they may eat over the Winter Break? Well, look no further!
HECK is pleased is announce our Winter Break 3-a-Day Challenge! We challenge all MV students to eat three fruits and vegetables a day during the entire break. All students who successfully complete this challenge will be entered into a drawing to win one of TWO:
$20 gift certificate to El Cerrito Natural Grocery and a farmers’ market cookbook!
That’s right – there will be two winners!
There is some fine print such as French fries, fruit roll-ups, and veggie sticks do NOT count and that one of the three daily produce items must be a vegetable. 14
